Dr. Mohamed Ali\nMohamed Shukri hails from a traditional Muslim family from Matara, in the  south of Sri Lanka. He was born in June 1940\nand had his early education at St. Thomas\u2019 College, Matara. It was a leading\nEnglish school during that period. He entered the University of Peradeniya in\n1960 and obtained his first class honors degree in Arabic and Islamic studies\nin 1965 and subsequently appointed as a lecturer in Arabic and Islamic studies\nin the same year at the University of Peradeniya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1973, on being\nawarded the commonwealth scholarship for his postgraduate studies in United\nKindom, he joined  the University of\nEdinburgh in UK and obtained his PHD degree in 1976. On his return to Sri\nLanka, in 1976, he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Kelaniya in\nthe department of Arabic and Islamic Culture and also held the position of\nSenior Lecturer and Head of the department in University of Kelaniya. In 1980,\nhe held the position of the Head of the department of Arabic and Islamic\nstudies at Dumbara campus of University of Peradeniya. In 1981, at the\ninvitation of the great Muslim philanthropist Naleem Hajiar, he assumed the\nposition of Director of Jamiah Naleemiah and continues to hold this position to\nthis day in that esteemed institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academic\nContributions and positions held<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the field of\neducation in Sri Lanka, Dr. Shukri was offered an opportunity to make his\ncontribution when the minister of education appointed him between 1978-1979 to\nserve as a member of the education reform committee appointed to study and\nrecommend reforms in the field of education. He functioned as an academic\nconsultant to the department of Arabic and Islamic studies of South Eastern\nUniversity since its inception and also functioned as the member of the\nUniversity Council. He also served as the member of the committee appointed by\nthe National Institute of Education (NIE) to draft the history syllabus in the\nschool curriculum. In 2001, he was elected as the member of the executive\ncouncil federation of the Universities of the Islamic World in Morocco. Dr.\nShukri held many important positions in the academic and administrative field.\nSri Lanka national library service board, Sri Lanka Sahithya Mandalaya,\nNational Commission of UNESCO, Official Language Commission are some of the\ninstitutions and organizations in which he held memberships and made\nsignificant contributions. He also served as a member of the Board of\nManagement of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology. He also functions as a\nmember of  the  Advisory Board of Muslim Programs in Sri\nLanka Broadcasting Corporation and Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Works and\nCompilations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Shukri who is\nproficient in Arabic, English, Tamil and Sinhala has number of compilations and\npublications to his credit. \u201cIslam and Education (1970)\u201d<\/em>, \u201cMankind in\nPeril (1970)\u201d, \u201cMuslims of Sri Lanka (Edited) (1986)<\/em> are some of his\nimportant compilations in English. He also wrote many books in Tamil.\n\u201cAl-Quran- its Doctrine and way of life (1981)\u201d,<\/em> \u201cIslamic Dawah and\nModern World Challenges (1982)\u201d<\/em>, \u201cSufis in Defence of Faith (1984)\u201d,\n\u201cHadis and Sunnah (1993)\u201d<\/em>, \u201cNaleem Hadjiar-His life and contributions\n(1993)\u201d<\/em>, \u201cThe Life and Thought of Imam-al-Ghazzali (1997)\u201d<\/em>, “Human\nRights in Islam (1996)”, “Muslim writers and their Responsibilities\n(1996)”, \u201cIslamic Life and Thought (1996)\u201d,<\/em> \u201cCentrers of Islamic\nCulture and Civilization During the Medieval Period (1997)\u201d<\/em>, \u201cReligion\nand Science (1997)\u201d<\/em>, are some of his important works in Tamil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this works\nand compilations in English and Tamil based on deep study and research on the\nbasis of training in research methodology he had gained in the western\nUniversity, Dr. Shukri was able to expound an authentic exposition of Islamic\nconcepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International\nConferences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Shukri\nparticipated in number of international conferences held in Mecca, Saudi\nArabia, Bahrain, Cairo, Malaysia, Qatar, Pakistan and in UK displayed his deep\nknowledge, erudite learning and scholarship by his lectures and presentations\nand brought honor to Sri Lanka. In 1987, he participated in the millennium\ncelebration of the founding of Al-Azad University and brought great honor to\nthe country. Apart from subjects related to Islamic studies and culture. Dr.\nShukri had delivered lectures and made academic presentation in various\nconferences on subjects related to world peace, archaeology, history, science, comparative\nreligion and Alcoholism and Drug addiction. These lectures and presentations\nreflect his deep knowledge and familiarity in many disciplines and contemporary\nsocial problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights, the\nsubject that has engaged the attention of all the people in recent times was an\narea he was much interested. He has written many learned articles on this theme\nin the Muslim World Leaque Journal published from Saudi Arabia. His studies on\nMuslim thinkers and philosophers such as Al-Ghazzali and Al-Baruni were\npublished in international journals and also he has contributed articles  on Muslim contribution to Science and\nCivilization. His article on Jabir bin Hayyan\u2019s contribution to chemistry was\npublished in 1990 in the Journal of Science and Medicine of Hamdard Institute,\nPakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awards and\nRecognitions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Shukri was able\nto forge academic relationship with international scholars in the field of\nIslamic Studies. His contacts with Professor S.A. Imam and Professor W.S.\nKarunaratne at University of Peradeniya and University of Kelaniya left a deep\nimpact on his academic personality. Though he moved with scholars and leaders\nof international repute, the simplicity he displays as a Muslim is a matter of\npride for us as Sri Lankans. When one talks to him, he feels that he is talking\nto an intimate friend and a close companion. Though he is a highly respected\nacademic personality, he is modest and unassuming. He is a noble person about\nwhom entire Muslim community could be proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\nIn recognition and appreciation of his services, the cultural ministry of the\nsouthern provincial council honored him by a conferring in him the title of\n\u201cRohana Ran-Silu\u201d in 2003. Hindu Cultural Ministry awarded him the title of\n\u201cKala Ma-Mani\u201d. All Ceylon YMMA Conference conferred him the award of \u201cY\npersonality of the Year\u201d for 2005. Sri Lanka student Islamic Movement awarded\nhim the \u201cWahda Award\u201d in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in our hometown Matara and served as our colleague\nin the academic staff of University of Kelaniya. Dr. Mohamed Ali Mohamed Shukri\nwho is respected by all the communities of this country is a linguist,\nphilosopher, scholar of Islamic studies and religion, a social worker, and an\nexpert in the middle east and a historian and above all is a humanist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
